I want to say I really like your blog. Only one thing I took issue with and you haven't done it lately is call Skinheads a cult. We do not fit the definition of a cult. We are a culture. You say you took latin? cult comes from cultus (worship) and culture comes from culturare based on colere (cultivate) we Skinheads are not worshiping the clothes or music or lifestyle. We are cultivating it, making it stronger. Cult holds a negative connotation and we don't need non Skins thinking that

"Cult" is British slang for any youth culture.  That is common usage over there.  That’s why I have picked up the term to use here.

The public access hardcore news thing from the 80's was called Backporchvideos. All of the videos used to be on youtube.

Ah, thank you.

In the last year or so I’ve been seeing patterned tights other than black fishnets becoming very popular for skinhead girls. I’ve seen lace tights, flesh-toned fishnets, floral tights, even ones that almost looked like an argyle pattern. Now, this may seem like a small matter, especially since the…

The Argyle pattern you mentioned are closer to what the early skingirls wore, fishnets came in in the 80’s a bit of a hold over from the punk influence in the late 70’s.

Skinhead dress has always been about showing off your boots, it was the boots that changed rather than the style with DMs replacing the original work boots. The suits were a carry over from the mods in the 60;s had a resurgance with 2tone in the 70’s/80’s.

To be honest the one thing that will stick in my mind as this generations contribution to skinhead fashion is Adidas Samba trainers as when I got into this the only people who wore them where the casuals and football hooligans who where as far from skins of the time as the hippies of the 60’s where from the original skins, but this seems to be an American influence on the whole thing.

I’ve always seen skins wearing Sambas, along with other Adidas stuff.  I’ve seen a lot of picture of skins in the UK wearing various football jersey type shirts, and the closest approximation to that here is Adidas stuff.  And, Sambas have always been a part of the style here.  I tend to ALWAYS have a pair of Sambas, haha.

You’re definitely right - the Sambas are this generation’s contribution!

Chelsea/Feathercut.
Trevs blonde hair is cut into a kind of Feather cut where the hair is longer and ‘feathered’ into layers, whereas Kelly has a Chelsea cut which is cropped short with fringes front and back and side pieces.

Thank you for clearing up the terminology.  And there’s obviously going to be some overlap, and intermediate styles… but this sums it up!

what are some acceptable haircuts for skinheads? What are your favourite? I love a proper chelsea.

Well… for the guys, anywhere from a clean-shaved head with a razor, all the way up to hair about an inch long.  The consensus around my way tends to be that fresh cuts, at least, should keep their hair relatively short for a good long while.  After someone’s  been a skinhead for a long time, who am I to question if they want to have their hair a little longer, or have a short mohawk or something?  I think if you’ve put in your time, that type of thing is fine.

I suppose a SHORT flat-top is also OK for guys.  And obviously some variations like shaved-in “parts” are nice touches, if that’s your style.

For girls, pretty much they gotta have a chelsea - or in rare cases, a shaved head.  Some girls can pull off a straight-up buzz cut!  Most look better with a chelsea.  The length doesn’t matter, and whether or not there is fringe in the back doesn’t matter.  Again, a lot of people seem to feel that everyone should keep the majority of their head short for a while after shaving down.

I tried to answer this as thoroughly as possible - hope I’ve helped!

it'd be nice to see some more style-related stuff on here.

Fair enough then - I will get on that ASAP!

haha I wasn't trolling, I was simply asking a question. I like your blog and was curious. At any rate, keep up the good work, I think you make all around good posts.

Fair enough then.  To be quite honest, about a year.  However, I have been involved in the punk scene since I was 15.  I’ve always known skins, and some of my best friends are skins and always have been.  So, after making a lot of positive changes for myself in my life, I decided I also wanted to be a skinhead - to make it show on the outside as well, what was in my heart my whole life.

I’m fed up of stupid ass trendy birds thinking it’s cool to be a sharp. If you were a skinhead you would know it’s not cool to be sharp.

Being a skinhead doesn’t have much to do with what’s “cool” and what’s “not”. There is far more wrong with this picture that the fact that her jacket says “sharp”. Like the fact that it says it in ELECTRICAL TAPE over what clearly used to be an Anarchy sign… and more importantly, wtf kind of hair cut is that?! It looks like someone just shaved a chunk out of her mohawk (and judging from the anarchy sign, I’m sure that’s exactly what happened) If she wanted to ATTEMPT to jump into being a skingirl THAT bad, she could have at least shaved it all off leaving just her bangs in the front. THIS is just a complete mockery of skingirls everywhere.

Happy to see someone else share my opinion, This girl is not a skingirl and she’ll never be one !

I really agree with the latter commentary, and felt something had to be said about this one.  Being a skinhead seems to be getting trendier and trendier everyday, and the sad truth is we will be seeing more and more of this.
I wish only the best for her, and if she wants to really get into skin culture - cool.  But as it stands, this girl cannot call herself a skinhead.  That is not a chelsea, nor is it really a “shaved head” of any sort.  Sure, it’s a kinda “alternative” or punk haircut for a girl, but it’s not a skinhead hairstyle.
People get all up in arms about when people try and set strict definitions of what is “okay” for skinhead style - and other people get really upset about deviations.  I’m not really in either camp.  But the simple bottom line is that skinhead is a culture based on TRADITIONS.  No matter where you fall within the skinhead cult, tradition is absolutely a strong factor constantly at play - or should be!
So, haircut aside, the vest is also awful.  Electrical tape is NOT an okay skinhead fashion accessory - fucking period.  Even if that was done with a big black marker, that woulda been acceptable in my eyes.  A lot of teenage skinheads have had marker writing or drawing on denims going back to the earliest Oi! days in the ’80s.  That isn’t something I would rock myself, but all I’m saying is… even that would have been tolerable within the realm of skinhead fashion.  This electrical tape shit is NOT.
I’m sure I will get hated on by someone for saying this - but this is something I definitely had a strong opinion on, and I think most skins would agree.  I bet this girl doesn’t have any older skins around her to show her the ropes.  If she did, they wouldn’t have let her leave the house like this.
I’m not even touching the anarchy sign!  Haha.

Awesome.  I’m not going to take your bait, troll.  This blog is about content - not my personal life, or posts going back and forth with an anonymous dickhead.

how long have you been skin for?
